The Magistrates Court
The Magistrates Court is located on St. Paul’s Square. The building is reportedly haunted by the same phantom that haunts the Clerk’s Offices at Mill Street (see below) – a former Clerk who died suddenly in work. Phantom footsteps are reported.

Mill Street
38 Mill Street in Bedford was once home to the offices of the Magistrates Clerks. There were reports of the audible phenomena of strange footsteps and knocking on doors.

Newnham Avenue
The Methodist Chapel on Newnham Avenue is reputedly haunted - there have been reports of an apparition described as being of “a man in black trousers and a light tweed coat” walking through a wall. Witnesses state that the figure leaves a trail of “white mist” behind him.

Union Street/A6 Roundabout
The ghost of Black Tom, a local “young rogue” and petty thief hung in the late 18th Century, haunts this location which was the site of his execution. He is described as having his head bowed and wearing clothing fitting an earlier time, which has led some to believe that he is someone “in fancy dress”.

The name of the town is thought to derive from the name of a Saxon chief called Beda, and a ford crossing the River Great Ouse.
Bedford was a market town for the surrounding agricultural region from the early Middle Ages.
