Ampthill Castle

Ampthill Castle was built in the 15th century by Sir John Cornwall. Sadly, nothing remains of the castle today, other than a cross erected in the 1770's that marks the site within Ampthill Great Park. However, this castle had the distinction of being where Henry VIII would come and hunt. Indeed, he was a frequent visitor. Catherine of Aragon lived here from 1531 until her divorce from Henry VIII in 1533.

The site of this former castle is reputedly haunted by the spectre of a knight on horseback. This knight is clad in shining armour, carrying a colourful shield and lance. However, other reports state that the ghost is more of a misty figure.
