Hartwell Farm

The well at Hartwell Farm near Cranfield Rectory had a reputation for curing sore eyes. In Batchelor’s Agricultural Survey of Bedfordshire published in 1813, it refers to this well stating, “used for sore eyes, being impregnated with iron, holy well implying that at one time it was held in high estimation”.

NB We do not advocate the use of any wells featured on this site and cannot vouch for their alleged qualities.

Wood End Road

Wood End Road is the haunt of Lady Snaggs, a beautiful young woman murdered some centuries past. The poor woman was beheaded and her jewellery stolen. It is believed her jealous husband killed her when her affair with a farmhand came to his attention, but made the killing look to be the responsibility of robbers.

Her apparition has been seen “pacing restlessly” along the road. Sometimes she appears headless.
