Biggs Cottage

Biggs Cottage is located in an area called Wash Common, a small suburb to the south of Newbury.

According to the author Poole, it is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Civil War soldier who was on sentry duty and slept here on the night before the Battle of Newbury (20th September 1643).

Market Place

Newbury Market Place is full of hussle and bussle in daylight hours, but takes on a very different air after dark according to McClouhlin.

The area is reputedly haunted by the ghost of Thomas Barrie, an old man who was held in the stocks located here in 1538. Barrie had his ears nailed to the wooden frame of the stocks all day. At the end of the day, when he asked to be released, his cruel tormentor sliced off bothh his ears with a sword. The resulting shock killed poor Thomas Barrie. It is said that on dark nights, Thomas walks the area moaning in pain.
