Chenies Manor House

Chenies Manor House

According to the author Coxe, one or possibly two apparitions haunt the house, although he states that one is ‘unidentified’. However, according to www.amersham.org.uk, the phenomena consist of ‘heavy footsteps’ heard on the stairs ‘like the sound of a limping man’; thudding noises and an ‘eerie tinkling laughter’ are regularly heard by staff in the armoury; doors are said to open; floorboards creak; and the apparition of a headless man walks in the ornamental grounds at the south of the Manor.

They suggest that as Henry VIII had problems with one of his legs and found it difficult to climb stairs, it could be his ghost that is heard. However, is this simply a case of trying to make the alleged phenomena fit the known history?

Matthews describes the apparition as being “clearly a man… a heavily set person dressed in dark clothes… he has a limp”.

Chenies Village Green

One of the houses in the area of the Village Green is reputedly haunted. The sounds of babies crying from inside the house when there are none in the house or the neighbouring houses have been reported, as well as other auditory effects such as the humming of a man “heard extremely clearly” and the “whistling of a small girl”. Kinetic phenomena include doors opening by themselves.
