Medmenham Abbey

Medmenham Abbey

Here at Medmenham Abbey (pictured above), the infamous Hellfire Club held orgies and mysterious ceremonies, and no doubt practised what their motto stated – Fais ce que tu voudras (Do What Thou Wilt), a philosophy of life associated with François Rabelais fictional abbey at Theleme, and later used by the infamous Aleister Crowley, the English cultist, astrologer, mystic and ceremonial magician.

Underneath the Abbey, Sir Francis Dashwood had a series of caves carved out from an existing one. It was decorated again with mythological themes, phallic symbols and other items of a sexual nature.

Today, the Abbey is a private residence and is not open to the public.
