The Old Ferry Boat Inn

The Old Ferry Boat Inn

The Old Ferry Boat Inn (or Ye Olde Ferry Boat Inn) is one of the greatest attractions to the village as it is one of scores of pubs in Great Britain to claim to be the country's oldest. The Inn has also gained a reputation of being haunted.

It is allegedly haunted by the ghost of one Juliet Tewslie (or Tousley or Tewsley depending on the source) who committed suicide here on 17th March, circa 1078. It is claimed that she was unhappy in her relationship with her lover, Tom, who is said to have buried her under a granite block oer which the Inn now stands. On the night of 17th March, she is supposed to rise from her grave and wander the Inn. Other phenomena include the sounds of footsteps and "old-fasioned music", and doors opening and closing of their own volition.
