According to Coxe, Gilsland is another location where you will find an account of the "Cauld Lad" - a small boy who laments that he is cold. He states that this apparition has been seen and touches unsuspected people with his icey hands. However, no firm location is provided.

There are a few curious reasons for many people visiting Gilsland Spa.
These include the Popping Stone, an enigmatic stone some half a mile from the Gilsland Spa Hotel in a secluded glade, linked to various courtship and fertility rituals. Next to the stone was the Kissing Bush, an ancient hawthorn which died in the 1940s.
There is also the actual Spa, which according to Coxe is a chalybeate spring where you can still enjoy the waters.
