Souther Fell stands to the south of Mungrisdale village in the Northern Fells of Cumbria.
On Midsummer Eve, 1735, a farmhand was working in the fields of Mungrisdale. His attention was drawn to the direction of Souther Fell and a "huge army" walking from east to west on top of the hill. He watched the procession for a number of minutes, before it disappeared into a gap in the hillside. Two years later and again on Midsummer Eve, a family reported a similar experience.
