Gidleigh Castle

Gidleigh Bridge

The stone bridge that crosses the Blackaton Brook is said to be haunted by the sounds of a fight. Nearby, the apparition of a woman who drowned herself has been reported.

Scorhill Circle

Scorhill (pronounced Scorill) Stone Circle is now the commonly known name for Gidleigh Stone Circle or Steep Hill Stone Circle. It is one of Devon's biggest and most intact stone circles, and is situated on Gidleigh Common near the village of Gidleigh.

Coxe describes the custom that once took place here. "Faithless wives and wantons" would have to wash in Cranmere Pool then run around the circle three times, following which they passed through a Tolmen by the River Teign, then onto Grey Wethers where they would beg forgiveness. If the stones remained upright, this was a good sign. Should one fall, the woman would be crushed.
