New Bridge

Newbridge or New Bridge is a Grade II* listed medieval bridge over the River Dart, Dartmoor. It was built in 1413, and is found on the road between Ashburton and Two Bridges, and connects Aish Tor to Holne Chase.

It is believed to be haunted by pixies.

A Sacrificial Rite

Until some point in the early part of the 20th century, an unusual custom still took place in Holne. The custom would involve a ram being brought from the moor before daybreak on Old Midsummer’s Day, then tied to a menhir (a large upright standing stone) approximately 6ft high in Ploy Field. The animal was then killed, roasted whole and then sliced up. The inhabitants then scrambled for the food.
