Jay's Grave

Hound Tor

Hound Tor lies a short distance from the remains of an abandoned and isolated medieval village settlement under the care of English Heritage.

Some people find the atmosphere here unbearable, with some claiming that individuals have fallen into a trance at the spot.

Jay's Grave

Jay's Grave (pictured above) is located just outside Manaton on the road between Heatree Cross and Hound Tor. According to the story, Kitty Jay was a young 18th century woman who committed suicide after being abandoned by her deceitful lover. As was customary with suicides at that time, she was buried at a crossroads with a stake through her heart. However, in 1860 her remains were discovered and interred at this spot.

Since that time, flowers have mysteriously appeared on the grave, although no persons have admitted responsibility for it. There are reports of a female apparition floating above the grave.
