The Hangman's Stone

Located just past the junction for Seaton on the A3052 main road from Axminster to Exeter, you can find the Hangman's Stone. This rock was so-named when a sheep rustler came to an unfortunate demise. Apparently, having stolen the sheep, he tied its legs together and slung it over his back to carry it home. Stopping to rest at the rock, which is incidentally shaped like a chair, the sheep slipped from his back causing him to be choked where he sat. It is said the unfortunate thief was buried at the spot and his spirit still hangs around to this day (sorry!).
