Colchester Castle is an example of a largely complete Norman castle, and is a Grade I listed building. Construction of the castle began between 1069 and 1076. It is now under the care of Colchester and Ipswich Museums.
It is reputedly haunted by the apparition of a "small, thin" man with a limp. Some believe this to be the wraith of one James Parnell, a 17th century quaker who was imprisoned at the castle and died there in 1656.
