Wycoller Hall

Wycoller Hall

Wycoller Hall dates back to the end of the 16th century, and was built upon the site of a house occupied in 1507 by Piers Hartley. By the 1590s a substantial house had been built, replacing Piers' original dwelling.

In 1611, the estate came into the possession of the Cunliffe family, after the marriage of Pier's daughter Elizabeth to Nicholas Cunliffe.

By the early 19th century, the Cunliffe family had run up huge gambling debts and the estate sold to settle them. Large parts of the stonework to be sold off as a means of this. The ruins are now listed, and form part of Wycoller Country Park.

Wycoller Hall is reputedly haunted by a number of apparitions. These include a spectral black hound called Guytrash Lightfoot, which patrols the ruins and disaster or death usually follows to a loved one of the witness. Another ghost is the phantom horseman, said to be one of the cruel Cunliffe family that murdered his wife. It is said that the whole brutal scene and the bloodcurdling screams are replayed before the horseman rides away. As he does so, the horse breathes flames from its nostrils.
