St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church is situated in the centre of the surrounding farms and cottages, close to the ruins of Edmondthorpe Hall. The church holds the tomb of Sir Roger Smith. A mark in the alabaster of the Smith tomb helped establish the Edmondthorpe Witch Legend. The legend maintains that Lady Ann Smith (died 1652) was a witch who could transform into a cat. While in such a guise, she was wounded in the paw with a meat cleaver by her butler, and the injury remained on her hand when she became human again.
