St. John the Baptist Church at Aylmerton

The Shrieking Pits

The area around the village is dotted with iron-age pits dating to around 900AD. One in particular pit near St. John the Baptist Church (pictured above) is reputedly haunted by the sounds of shrieks (hence its name), and the apparition of a woman in white. It is said she is searching for the body of her child who was murdered and buried here by her husband.
