Atherstone Market Square

The Phantom Farmer

One of the roads in Atherstone is reputedly haunted by the ghost of a farmer killed during a wager. He bet that he could ride from Atherstone to Alderminster within a certain time, but was unseated by an overhanging bough in the dark and killed as a result. It is said that if you see his ghost once, you will see him a total of three times.
