St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's Church

The eighth Baron Stourton and his spectral band of thugs allegedly haunt the churchyard. The Baron was hanged for the murder of William Hartgill. Hartgill was steward to the Baron's father. The apparition of the murder victim has been reported in the church (pictured above) itself.

Hartgills

A house known as Hartgills (although it is yet to be confirmed if the house was once owned or occupied by the murder victim, William Hartgill) is located to the south of the church. In the 1800's it was known as the Malt House. Coxe states that there is “a mystery” about it, but does not really clarify the full extent of the enigma.
