House of Dun

House of Dun

The Dun Estate was home to the Erskine family from 1375 until 1980. The House of Dun was designed by William Adam and was finished in 1743, replacing the original 14th Century Tower House. It was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland in 1980. The house is open between March and September, although the estate is accessible all year round.

The house is reputed to be haunted by a number of apparitions. These include unknown figures in the library and on the main staircase. A knight has been reported in the grounds, and a headless man is said to wander the lanes outside. The phantom sounds of harp music have been reported from amongst the trees on the estate.
