Ynys Llanddwyn, Anglesey, Wales

Ynys Llanddwyn Island lighthouse

Legends of Ynys Llanddwyn

The island is rich in legends, in particular the association with Dwynwen. The name Llanddwyn means “The Church of St. Dwynwen”. Dwynwen is the patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St. Valentine. Her Saint’s Day is January 25th and is often celebrated by the Welsh with cards and flowers.

The remains of St. Dwynwen’s Church can be found, and is near here that you will find Ffynnon Ddwynwen. It is said that this well could foretell the outcome of a love affair - if it bubbled it would be successful. It was also believed to have aphrodisiac qualities.
