Gwrych Castle

Gwrych Castle

Built in 1820, this folly is home to a number of ghosts that pre-date its construction. The ghost of a 17th century Civil War soldier has been reported; a white lady wearing "a gown and a long, pointed hat with a veil" has been seen nearby; the Red Lady wanders the grounds at dusk; the stables are haunted, and there is also a cursed room.

To top it all off, the road below the castle is said to have a number of ghosts! The apparition of an old woman and a “mysterious ball or wheel of fire” has been witnessed along the road. In February 2010, a ghost was apparently photographed at the castle and featured in The Sun newspaper.

Visitor Information

Abergele is a community and small market town, situated on the north coast of Wales between the holiday resorts of Colwyn Bay and Rhyl, in Conwy County Borough.

The meaning of the name Abergele can be deduced by aber being the Welsh word for estuary and 'Gele' the name of the river which flows through the town.
