Cwnwyd Square

The Moors

The moors at Cynwyd are said to be the haunt of the gwyllgi – the Welsh Hound of Hell. In centuries past, an account from an Edward Jones (a former Denbighshire Yeomanry Sergeant) claims the creature chased him whilst he was riding the area on horseback.

It was described as “a beast of fearsome visage and blood-shot eye”. Jones managed to outride it to the safety of his farm – Crychynan Uchf.

Crychynan Uchaf

The same Edward Jones mentioned in the story above also claimed that his farmhouse was visited by the “little folk” or fairies, which removed all the slates off his roof one night with “noise and fury”, and then duly replaced them all!
