Mill House Cottage

Sources state that in the 1800’s there lived a miser at Mill House Cottage. One night, a lost Excise Man stumbled across the dilapidated cottage and managed to convince the miserly owner to let him spend the night there - in exchange for a highly inflated price, of course! Soon after the Excise Man had settled down he was disturbed by something moving nearby. Suspecting the old man was going to rob him he lit a candle, but the room was empty. He again tried to settle, but this time was disturbed by a figure that appeared to be wearing a Jew’s gabardine standing in the room with him. It drifted out of the room, so the excise man followed. Eventually, the figure had glided through the door of the cottage to a spot in the yard then disappeared. The man marked the spot and immediately set off to Denbigh. Once there he informed the authorities of the event, and returned with them forthwith. They dug up the spot that he had marked to discover an old well, at the bottom of which were the remains of a Jewish traveller. The miser was questioned and fully admitted his heinous crime. He was duly hanged and Mill House fell into ruin.
