Oystermouth Castle

Oystermouth Castle was founded by William de Londres of Ogmore Castle soon after 1106 following the capture of Gower by the Normans. It was destroyed and rebuilt on at least two occasions during its history. It is maintained under the responsibility of the City and County of Swansea council.

The castle is said to be haunted by a White Lady. In life, she was said to be a young Irish lady forced to become the wife of the cruel Earl Neville. She wished to be freed of the relationship, and had heard of the legend concerning the Wishing Post in the dungeon. She visited the post, and walked around it nine times whilst in prayer, just as the legend stated was required in order for a wish to come true. The following day, her body was found lying in her chamber “like a saint, with hands folded on her breast”.

Her ghost has been reported in the dungeon and a room two flights up within the great gatehouse.

Mumbles Lighthouse

Mumbles Lighthouse was completed in 1794. It sits on the outer of two islands off Mumbles Head, and is clearly visible from any point along the five mile sweep of Swansea Bay.

It is said to be haunted by the cries of a man buried here without Christian burial. Legend says that before the lighthouse was built, there was a chapel there that was run by monks. Men in a rowing boat, who brought a body of a young man onto the island, approached one of these aged monks. He allowed them to take the body into a cave, and in return was given money for masses to be said. It is reputed that this soul cries for a Christian burial.
