Conington Level Crossing has been awarded the rather dubious title of "the crossing of death", due to the number of serious and fatal accidents to have taken place there. Jones sites two such examples in his book. Consequently, the crossing earned a reputation of being haunted.
Railway signalmen allegedly reported the sounds of the locked gates opening and closing, as well as the sound of car tyres on gravel.
