Renwick

All Saints Church

According to local legend, the village was terrorized by a cockatrice in 1733. A cockatrice - a mythical beast, essentially a two-legged dragon or serpent-like creature with a cock's head - could kill people by either looking at them, touching them or breathing on them. At Renwick, the creature flew out from All Saints Church whilst work was being undertaken. However, this particular nasty was brought down by John Tallantire, who struck it with the branch of the Rowan Tree (which are known as protection against all things evil).
