The ghost of a servant girl haunts Dene Manor. In 1936, Harry Price - the famous psychic researcher - broadcast on the BBC from Dene Manor. During the broadcast, fluctuations in temperature were recorded on his equipment. During the remainder of the night that Price spent in the house with BBC technicians and others, mysterious footsteps were heard and visual phenomena experienced.

The apparition of a woman dressed in orange silk is said to haunt Steel Lane. This is said to be the shade of Mlle Pinard, the mistress of a soldier from the Napoleonic War, who returned home with her lover. However, she was not ‘well received’, which upset her so badly she hanged herself. Another account suggests that she was left unwanted after giving birth to his child.
