Nant Hall Road is apparently built on a Roman Cemetery, and has a very haunted reputation. In a council flat in the early 1990’s, young tenants asked to be re-housed following various audible phenomena such as footsteps and banging, after which there was the appearance of a “grey, misty figure” hovering outside their bedroom. A medium claimed that it was the spirit of a former nanny from the early 1900’s, who was drawn to the young couple’s new baby.
This former police station was converted into a house, and during the 1960’s was haunted by an old woman dressed in long, dark clothing seen by the then occupant. She described the ghost as a friendly presence. It was later converted into publicity offices, where the former occupant visited and informed staff of her connection to the building, only to be informed that other people did not like being there after dark because it was haunted!
The area along the sea front is said to be haunted by the ghost of a white nun. She is usually seen on summer evenings. One encounter describes a witness walking his dog when he came face to face with her – however, beneath the wimple there was no face! His dog turned and ran, whilst the poor man was rooted to the spot with fear. He could only watch as the ghost walked right through him. As she did, there was an intense chill, but when he turned around she had vanished.
